Cabbage is no ordinary vegetable. Besides being packed with nutrients, its medicinal properties are valued – cabbage leaves draw out fluids from wounds and cabbage juice salves eyes. Cabbage is easy to grow and is tasty in salads, soups and pies. Artists have elevated cabbages in paintings such as Still Life with Red Cabbages by van Gogh and Man in a Field of Cabbages by Munch.

News of the Cabbage Bandit piqued my curiosity. Djo BaNkuna opposed a police fine for planting a cabbage patch on the sidewalk in front of his house. His only intention was to share veggies with communities in need. I pondered, surely the police have more serious problems to deal with?! So, I raised my crochet hook in solidarity with others rising in support of cabbage bandits.
